The character name is not finalized. The character name will be fix once the official English translation light novel is release.

“This… it’s a magic item.”

Unbelievably, the wings on the Sky Person’s back weren’t real. They were a magic item.

“R-Run for it!”

While I was distracted by the magic item, the beat-up knights scrambled to get away.

“What should we do? Go after them?”

Liriela asked if she should capture the knights.

“They aren’t exactly our enemies, so we can let them go. Besides, the person who’s likely to talk is right here.”

I said, pointing at the commander I’d knocked out.

“For now, I guess I’ll hit him with a healing spell and check his equipment.”

I cast Heal on the commander and then started removing his gear.

“Both the armor and spear are decent magic items, but… calling this a ‘Holy Spear’ is giving it way too much credit.”

“You can tell all that?”

“Based on that last fight and this location, I’d say in terms of performance, it’s an outdated model. Probably something they’d offload onto a regional defense force.”

“You can tell all that, huh. But still, something’s strange.”

“What is?”

“The Sky People supposedly protected that town from a powerful monster, right? If so, shouldn’t they be much stronger? To be honest, from the feel of that fight, they’re no better than a D-Rank adventurer.”

That’s Liriela for you. She managed to figure all that out just from our brief fight.

“I can think of two possibilities for that.”

“Such as?”

“One: the Sky People back then were much stronger.”

That’s the really simple assumption.

“And the second?”

“It’s possible the Sky People’s magic items just happened to be a good match-up against that monster. This item is a spear, but its effect is to shoot offensive magic. If their opponent was a monster that couldn’t fly, they could just keep attacking from the sky, completely out of reach, and win without ever getting close. On top of that, if the monster was weak to the Light attribute, they’d look even more impressive.”

“I see. Given their strength, that second possibility seems the most likely.”

“But the real problem… is the fact that these wings are a magic item.”

I started to disassemble the wings I’d taken from the commander to understand their structure.

“Hey! Are you sure you should be breaking that?”

“It was already broken. I’m just taking it apart a bit.”

Hmm. Looking at this, it’s not a normal magic item. In fact… this is…

“Liriela.”

“What?”

“Yesterday, I explained why the sky islands float, right?”

“Yes, if I remember, the soil and stone of the sky islands contain Gravium, a mineral that floats when it reacts to magical power?”

“Exactly. And I’ve just confirmed that this mineral, Gravium, is also used in these wings.”

“What?!”

“Look. This stone set in the center is a Gravium crystal.”

I pointed to the base of the wings, at an iridescent crystal fixed to a small plate that connected the left and right wings.

“It’s a beautiful stone.”

“It seems the Sky People flew by channeling their magical power into this.”

“So the Sky People weren’t really winged angels after all?”

“Putting together what the commander said earlier, they’re most likely the descendants of the humans who once lived on the Sky Continent.”

“Descendants of the humans from the Sky Continent?!”

If you think of it that way, a lot of things make sense.

“I don’t know the exact cause, but just like the commander’s story said, the Sky Continent was destroyed, and in the chaos, people who could use flight magic might have vanished. Maybe all the normal magic items for flying were lost then, too. So, they just happened to drag this Gravium-powered magic item out of a warehouse somewhere and secured their only means of flight. That’s probably what happened.”

“I was already surprised that Sky People existed, but to find out they’re just normal humans—and descendants of the ancients—is even more shocking.”

Liriela’s eyes went wide as she looked at the unconscious commander.

“What are you talking about? You’re a descendant of the ancients, too, Liriela.”

“Huh?”

Liriela let out a cry of surprise at my words.

“And for that matter, I’m a descendant of the ancients, too. I mean, every human alive today is a descendant of the ancients, right? It’s not like we’re a different species.”

“Huh? U-Um, now that you mention it, I guess that’s true?”

Liriela seemed to accept my logic. Right? That’s why I was so surprised to hear a species name like “Sky People.” I’d never heard of such a race, even in my previous, previous life, so I’d been racking my brain trying to figure out where they came from.

“Ugh… uunh…”

“Ah, the commander’s waking up.”

I stood in front of the commander as she woke up, shaking her head.

“Well then. Why don’t you tell us a few things?”

“Wh-Who are you!?”

The commander thrust her hands out to grab her weapon, but her hands grasped nothing. Of course not. I took it while she was unconscious.

“M-My weapon… my armor?!”

“And your wings, too.”

“Gk-!”

At my words, the commander twisted her neck to look behind her.

“Th-They’re gone!? My wings are gone!?”

Yep, because I took them.

“Wh-Where are my wings!?”

“Right here.”

I pointed to the disassembled wings lying on the ground.

“M-My wiiiiiiings!?”

The commander crawled forward, staggering, towards her wings.

“Oh, what have I done! If it’s known I lost the wings entrusted to me by His Majesty, I… I’ll be…!”

Entrusted by His Majesty? So these wings are standard-issue, then?

“Is it really that bad if they find out your wings are broken?”

“Of course it is! The wings and the spear are sacred equipment! They’re precious artifacts with no replacements! If this gets out, I’ll be executed!”

Well, they are antiques. And it doesn’t look like they have anyone who can repair them.

But… this is a great opportunity.

“You’re making a wicked face, you know.”

“Kyuun.”

Alright, you two in the back, quiet down.

“Excuse me, miss. I have a rather good proposition for you.”

“Huh?”

The commander, who had been on the verge of tears, looked up at me, wondering what I wanted.

“How about I fix those for you?”

“…What?”

The commander stared at me blankly for a moment, but as my words sank in, her eyes shot open.

“C-Can you do it!? Can you really fix them!?”

She grabbed my shoulders, her expression desperate.

“Yes. I’ll fix them for you… if you answer my questions.”

“I’ll tell you anything!!”

Aha, she’s really desperate.

“You mentioned ‘His Majesty’ and ‘this country’ earlier. Is this sky island a nation?”

“Th-That’s right! The sky islands in this area are a nation ruled by His Majesty, the Sky King! Its name is the… Holy Sky Kingdom, Seraphium!”

“Pfft—!”

“R-Rex!?”

Whoa, the ‘Holy Sky Kingdom’? What kind of ridiculous name is that? Back in my previous life, a name that chuuni would be laughed at as a total joke. They’re even using a holy being’s name in the title. This is… this is hilariously bad. Who on earth came up with something so over-the-top!?

“Ahem, are you all right, Rex?”

Liriela, noticing my strange behavior, looked at me with concern. Sorry, I’m just trying my best not to laugh.

“Yes, I’m fine. Just… taken by surprise, that’s all.”

Still, I’ve never heard of a country with that name. It’s clearly a name that didn’t exist when the Sky Continent was still around. Even if I’d never heard of it, a name this ridiculous? One of my acquaintances from back then would have definitely brought it up as a joke.

“You said earlier there was no one who could use flight magic. Do you not have magic items that grant flight, either? These items use Gravium, right?”

“Gra-? What’s that?”

Oh? So she doesn’t even know that much. If this is the level of knowledge a commander has, getting information is going to be difficult.

“By the way, do you know why the Sky Continent collapsed?”

“I don’t. But when I was a child, my parents told me a fairy tale about how this sky island was once part of a giant sky island called the Sky Continent.”

“Is that a story all the residents know?”

“It’s a classic bedtime story. Once, a great king of the world and his people lived on the Sky Continent, ruling the heavens. But an evil race of demon folk invaded, and a war began. In the end, the king’s heroic decision succeeded in repelling the demon folk, but the price was that the Sky Continent was shattered to pieces.”

Hmm. ‘The evil folk’… that’s definitely the Majin. And the Sky Continent was destroyed by war. But… ‘the great king of the world who once ruled the sky’? Who’s that? If my memory is correct, the ones living on the Sky Continent were…

“Rex, something’s coming.”

Liriela looked to the sky, her voice full of caution.

“That is…”

The sky in the direction Liriela was looking was glittering silver. I activated my detection magic and felt nearly 100 contacts.

“It’s the main force of the Sky Knights.”

The commander looked up at the sky, her face pale.

I see. The knights who ran away earlier must have called their friends.

“Q-Quick, fix the wings! If they find out I broke them, I’ll be arrested as a criminal!”

Looks like this commander is in a complicated spot. But…

“Eeeh, I don’t think we’ll make it in time.”

Yeah, given the speed the knights are approaching, there’s no way I can repair this in time.

“N-No way…!”

“What do we do? Even if they aren’t that strong, fighting that many will be tough.”

Liriela, seeing the number of approaching enemies, suggested we’d be better off retreating. But, I’d say it’s the opposite. This is perfect timing.

“No, let’s engage them. If we take them down, we’ll probably be able to get even more information.”

That’s right. I couldn’t get much from a unit-leader-class commander, but a commander of that scale must have a decent rank. I’ll be able to get much more out of them.

“Liriela, please step back. I’ll wipe them out with magic.”

“Mm, got it.”

Liriela obediently fell back, and Fluffy also trotted behind me and plopped down.

“Kyu-fuu…”

He even let out a yawn. He has zero motivation. I guess he was really disappointed that the wings were fake.

“Kyuun.”

He rolled over, his paws dangling limply. There’s a limit to how unmotivated you can be.

“Okay, let’s get this over with quickly.”

I waited for the knights to get just within the perfect range, then activated the spell I had prepared.

“Mana Break!!”

I unleashed my wide-area, anti-magic-item spell at the knight brigade.

“W-Wha!? What’s happening? We’re… falling!?”

“The-The light! The spear’s holy light won’t work!”

“Aaaaaaah!”

One after another, the knights lost control and plummeted to the ground.

“Air Cushion!”

I cast a weak, wide-area shock-absorption spell.

“What was that!? Nothing even came out of you, but they all just… fell!”

Just as Liriela said, the spell I just cast didn’t release anything visible like fire or ice, or anything that could be felt like wind. But it definitely released something.

“It’s a spell that releases something invisible.”

“A spell that releases something invisible?”

“Yes. Its name is Mana Break. It’s an anti-magic-item spell that disrupts the flow of magical power.”

“An anti-magic-item spell!? I’ve never even heard of magic like that!”

Well, anti-magic-item spells aren’t exactly user-friendly, so they’re not common. They were originally created back when magic items were at their peak. A certain country created a legion fully equipped with magic items, and it was so devastating that this spell was invented to counter it by temporarily neutralizing magic items.

The legion that was hit by this spell found all their magic items turned into simple chunks of metal. Once they were completely immobile, they were wiped out.

After that, every country revised its strategy, realizing that relying too heavily on magic items was dangerous. Yep. I’m the one who invented this spell, by the way. And since all the countries stopped relying so much on magic items, it gradually fell out of use.

“That said, it only neutralizes magic items temporarily. They’ll be usable again after a little while.”

By the way, since it’s an anti-magic item spell, it doesn’t work on regular magic. It’s also not very effective on massive magic items, like the one embedded in the Megalo Whale. It’s a spell that disrupts the small-scale magic pathways within an item, so it’s not suited for disrupting large-scale magical power.

If those knights had been flying with flight magic, this spell wouldn’t have been very effective. But that wasn’t the reality. Robbed of their only means of flight, they fell from a considerable height, even if they had been descending to attack us. Thanks to the shock-absorption spell, no one died, but it seems almost all of them were injured from the impact. They were groaning and clutching themselves in pain, and the wings on their backs were pitifully broken.

“Well then, shall we go help them?”

“Huh? Help them? But they’re the enemy!”

Liriela was confused, since I’d said I was going to fight them, and now I was talking about helping.

“I never planned on wiping them out.”

My real goal lies elsewhere.

“Distant Area Heal!”

We walked up to the knights, and I healed them all with a remote, wide-area recovery spell.

“Ugh… th-the pain… it’s fading…?”

“Feeling better now, everyone?”

“!?”

The knights snapped their heads toward me in shock.

“If you’re still in pain, I can treat you.”

“D-Don’t mock us! All units, take flight! Surround the enemy from the air and annihilate them with the spear’s light!”

“””Sir!!!”””

At the chief commander’s order, the knights all tried to jump into the air. But their wings were miserably broken. All they could do was hop up and down uselessly.

“Wh-Why can’t we fly!?”

“I-It’s terrible, Commander! Our wings are broken!”

“What did you say!? How dare you break the sacred wings you were granted by His Majesty!”

The commander, the one they called “Chief,” roared, but… his wings were broken, too.

“B-But Commander, your wings are broken, too!!”

“What…!?”

At his subordinate’s words, the chief commander twisted his neck to look. There, he saw his own pathetically broken wings.

“…!?”

The commander’s face twisted in shock, then turned deathly pale.

“…Gk!?… Ah!?”

He was, quite literally, speechless.

“Now then, everyone!”

I called out, my voice loud enough to make all the knights look at me.

“How are those injuries? All better? Oh, but my… look at the wings on your backs. What a mess. It seems you’ll be in terrible trouble if those wings are broken… but can’t you fix them?”

“I-I-If we could fix them, we would have doooone it already!”

Yep, yep. If the chief commander is reacting like this, it means they really have no way to repair them.

“Oooooh, if His Majesty finds out I lost the wings he granted me, my family is… ruined…”

The knights hung their heads, their faces filled with despair.

“By the way… about those wings. If I told you I could fix them… what would you do?”

“Wh-What did you say!?”

Not just the chief commander, but every single knight’s head snapped up to look at me.

“Do you want me to fix them?”

“C-Can you really fix them?”

“Yes. If you all agree to be our friends, I’ll fix them as a token of our new relationship. Oh, but… you suspect us of being spies, don’t you? I guess we can’t be friends after all.”

I glanced sideways at the knights.

They all looked at each other and nodded.

“””We didn’t see any spies! And please, be our friend!!”””

“See? Getting along is what’s most important for people, isn’t it?”

“I just witnessed the most incredible blackmail.”

“Kyuuun.”

For some reason, Liriela’s shoulders slumped, and Fluffy made an exasperated gesture. What are you two talking about? A peaceful resolution is always the best way.
