- Chapter 162.5: Interlude: The Surprise of the Guardian Knights
(Perspective: Princess Flora’s guardian knights, the twins—Chloe, the elder sister and sorceress, and Layla, the younger sister and swordsman.)
We twins have served as Princess Flora’s guardians for a long time. Even though we are still young, we thought we had gained a wealth of experience, yet we have been constantly surprised by Her Highness’s fiancé, Lord William.
First, we were shocked to find that the legendary Teleportation Magic actually exists. The sensation of the scenery changing in an instant is not something one gets used to easily. Furthermore, the carriage Lord William remodeled is simply bizarre. At a glance, it looks like an ordinary carriage, but step inside, and there is a spacious living room, with a bath even further in the back.
“Fufu, when you’re near William-san, it’s just one surprise after another.” Her Highness laughs as she says this, but Lord William’s Production Skill is truly staggering. We had heard the rumors, but seeing it in person had a completely different impact.
Another thing that surprised us is that Her Highness looks happier than we have ever seen her before. Previously, Her Highness was expressionless, and people would sometimes whisper behind her back, calling her the “Doll Princess.” But since meeting Lord William and learning the merits of the Merchant Skill, she has become bright and positive, like a completely different person.
Furthermore, when she spends time with Lord William and his companions, she shows a carefree smile like a child. The fact that Her Highness can now laugh from the bottom of her heart is a joy for us sisters as well.
Thinking back to when the guardian knights for Princess Flora were being selected from among the Royal Guard, rumor had it that knights from high-ranking families were the candidates. But the ones Her Highness chose were us, the daughters of a Knight Baron.
A Knight Baron is technically treated as a noble, but they hold no territory and the title is often limited to one generation. We were frequently looked down upon by higher-ranking nobles.
“I have heard of your abilities from the Captain of the Royal Guard. I believe ability is more important than lineage.” Her Highness told us that when we greeted her for the first time after becoming her guardian knights.
For us, who had been looked down upon for our low family status and for being women, it was incredibly gratifying that Her Highness the Princess evaluated us based on our abilities.
Since then, while serving as her guards for a long time, we came to learn that Her Highness—who never showed emotion in public—is actually a kind and adorable person. We eventually came to call her “Princess” with affection. We were also influenced by Cecilia-san, the maid who has taken care of her since childhood, who calls her “Princess.”
Riding in the spacious carriage comfortably, we almost let our guards down, but this is the southern undeveloped lands where monsters roam rampant. Before long, we came under monster attack.
What attacked us was a pack of Magic Wolves. Even if each individual isn’t that strong, they are formidable monsters when they attack in a coordinated pack. “Not Magic Dogs, but a sudden pack of Magic Wolves? A difficult enemy.” “Yes, Sister. It seems it is our turn.”
However, our turn never came. Lord William’s younger sister, Lady Sophia, blew the pack away with the high-level wind magic, Tempest. To use high-level magic while still a child… and the power was immense. With a single spell, many Magic Wolves vanished, leaving behind only black smoke.
Then, the two Fairchild knights guarding Lord William dashed out like the wind and defeated the surviving Magic Wolves in the blink of an eye.
Next to appear were two Magic Boars. We braced ourselves for the appearance of monsters that were a cut above the Magic Wolves. However, this time, Lady Lucelina, the Chieftain of the Elves, unleashed the high-level water magic, Ice Blast.
Water attribute magic is often said to be weak in power, but Ice Blast increases its power by freezing the water. Even so, it was far more powerful than the same magic cast by the Royal Guard knights.
“That magic has incredible power.” “Her level is higher than the mages of the Royal Guard.” We were dumbfounded.
Then, when three Magic Wolves appeared, Her Highness asked Lord William if she could try shooting the Magic Gun. So, we exited the carriage and guarded Her Highness as she readied the Magic Gun.
When Her Highness fired the Magic Gun, the fire attribute magic Fire Arrow was unleashed. We were surprised that someone who isn’t a mage could truly use attribute magic. Its power was quite substantial as well, and she managed to defeat one Magic Wolf.
“I managed to defeat a monster too!” Her Highness rejoiced, looking as if she might jump up and down. As for the remaining two, one was defeated by the Dwarf Theodore-san using the earth magic Rock Bullet, and the other was taken down by Lord William with his Magic Gun.
We looked at each other’s faces. “We didn’t get a turn, did we?” “Yeah, everyone is too strong.” With this, we can dedicate ourselves solely to guarding Her Highness.
But there are no absolutes when facing monsters. We’ve heard that from veteran knights. If, by any chance, a monster appears that gives these people a hard time… then, at that moment, we shall show you the reason why we were selected as Her Highness’s guards.
