- Chapter 171: The Battle to Defend Woodpole
As soon as Theo and I dismounted from our horses, we hurriedly began changing the battlefield to be as advantageous for defense as possible.
First, Theo activated Earth Magic to raise the ground on both sides of the highway. Then, I used my Production Magic to coat the raised earth with stone so that it wouldn’t crumble even if monsters crashed into it.
By doing this, we narrowed the path the monsters could take. This should reduce the number of monsters we have to fight at the same time. To finish it off, Theo dug pitfall traps using Earth Magic.
“To change the terrain in such a short time… Theo-kun is amazing as well.” Being praised by the Baron, Theo looked bashful.
Next was the defensive position. Theo used Earth Magic to raise the ground where the knights would take up positions, creating a slope in front to weaken the momentum of the monsters’ charge.
I built wooden turrets for the archers and mages, reinforcing the surfaces with iron. This would allow them to spot distant monsters and make it easier to land arrows and magic.
“With this, the monsters’ momentum will be weakened!” “To think a turret could be built in the blink of an eye…” The knights were delighted.
Before long, the monsters surged toward us. It appeared to be a pack of Magic Wolves and Magic Dogs.
“Intercept them with magic first!” Responding to the Baron’s voice, the Woodpole family mages chanted their spells. “Let us match them.” Luna and Sophie prepared their magic as well.
As the mages chanted, several magic circles floated in the air. “Fire!” Colorful magic of red and blue was unleashed.
Many spells struck the monster herd. The exceptionally large flower of flame seemed to be Luna‘s magic, and the raging wind appeared to be Sophie‘s. As expected, the power of their magic is immense.
Taking the magic hits, a considerable number of monsters turned into black smoke and vanished. I hoped this would make them flinch, but the monsters continued to advance in an orderly fashion. They definitely seem coordinated. Their behavior is different from the monsters in the undeveloped lands that moved independently.
However, we are prepared as well. The monsters that slipped through the magic barrage fell into the pitfall traps this time. We took down the fallen monsters with magic and arrows. I decided to use my Magic Gun as well.
Seeing magic being fired from the Magic Gun, the Baron was shocked. “Lord William, what on earth is that?” “It is a magic tool called a Magic Gun. Like Teleportation Magic, please keep this a secret too.” “Understood. Lord William really is an existence beyond the norm.”
I hoped we could repel them just like this, but when an exceptionally large Magic Wolf at the rear of the pack barked, the monsters began to avoid the pitfall traps. “Master, that one seems to be the individual commanding the pack. Though it does not appear to be a Unique Species.” “Yeah. Commanded monsters are troublesome. It would be easier if they just charged in mindlessly.”
We had left a narrow path between the pitfall traps. If we made it completely impassable, they might detour off the highway and flank us. Since we have limited combat power and want to keep the defense focused on one point, we dared to leave a path open.
The knights, with swords drawn, intercepted the monsters approaching the defense line. “This is for our comrades who were taken yesterday!” “We won’t go down today, thanks to this good armor!” The Woodpole knights fought bravely.
Sophie stood in front of us, with Ria and Gil securing both her sides. Ria and Gil held back the surging Magic Dogs and Magic Wolves, slashing and taking them down one after another. Both of them have really polished their swordsmanship.
Then, Letty chanted a spell to activate her Magic Sword, dying her Mithril blade deep crimson. Wielding the Magic Sword, Letty slaughtered the monsters as if cutting through paper.
Some monsters were struck by arrows from Erenruel and Aurasneel as they passed through the path between the pits. Both of their aim was precise.
We and the Woodpole knights took down monsters one after another. But there were simply too many of them. Unlike in the southern undeveloped lands, no matter how many we defeated, more surged in one after another. It was truly the violence of numbers.
“Luna-san, we shouldn’t exhaust our magic power here, right?” “Yes, let us save as much mana as possible.” I don’t want to use any more of Luna‘s or Sophie‘s magic against Magic Wolves and Magic Dogs. We should save it for the Magic Boars that will likely come later.
Individually, the Magic Dogs and Magic Wolves aren’t that strong, but they are troublesome because they are coordinated. I really want to do something about that leader Magic Wolf. Since the leader won’t come to the front, we have no choice but to snipe it with magic or arrows.
“Everyone, I want you to aim for the leader-like Magic Wolf in the back!” Nodding at my voice, Erenruel loosed a carefully aimed arrow. “There!” Reading the leader’s movements, the arrow slipped through the gaps between the monsters and struck its leg perfectly.
Amazing. Truly a masterstroke of archery. “Now!” The moment its movement stopped, Aurasneel unleashed high-level wind magic and finished it off.
Having lost their leader, the monsters began to fall into the pits or flee. “Both Erenruel and Aurasneel are amazing!” Erenruel responded with a wink, and Aurasneel placed a hand on his chest in response.
