- Chapter 172: The Battle to Defend Woodpole: Part 2
We somehow managed to repel the pack of Magic Wolves and Magic Dogs. “We defeated the monsters!” The morale of the Woodpole knights was soaring.
“Thank you, Lord William. We were able to defeat the Magic Wolf and Magic Dog pack that gave us such trouble yesterday.” “It is thanks to the knights’ hard work. By the way, what happens after this?”
The Baron wore a bitter expression. “Unfortunately, this will not be the end. We merely crushed one of the vanguard units.” “As I suspected.”
I returned to my companions, who were taking a breather, and conveyed the Baron’s words. “If this were the end, we wouldn’t have any trouble.” “Yes, it is as Letty-san says. The threat of the monsters is not something like this.” Theo wore an unusually severe expression, perhaps recalling the hardships in the Sea of Trees.
“There is a high possibility that a herd of Magic Boars will come next. According to Grandmother, weaker monsters are placed at the outer edges of a massive horde, and the closer you get to the main force at the center, the stronger the monsters become.”
“I see. So it will just keep getting harder.” At this rate, it will be tough to hold the line. What should we do?
I came up with an idea and discussed it with Letty and Sophie. “I think that’s a good idea.” “Yes, it’s an interesting idea, Brother.”
Since the two agreed, I had Theo help me with the preparations. While we were doing that, we saw a cloud of dust rising in the distance. It was the next herd of monsters.
The knights who had been resting stood up. “Everyone! I know you are tired, but give it one more push. The sun is already dipping to the west.” “”Oh!!”” The knights responded to the Baron’s rallying cry.
Fortunately, monsters don’t seem to have night vision, so they don’t attack at night. Since it is December, the short days are a blessing in disguise.
Before long, the ground began to shake, and a deep rumbling sound that resonated in our stomachs could be heard. Approaching us was, as Luna predicted, a herd of Magic Boars.
The sight of the Magic Boar herd covering the ground was overwhelming. There must be two hundred of them. And we only have about thirty people.
I mustn’t get discouraged. My companions are all elites, and we have taken measures.
The Magic Boar herd spotted us, increased their speed, and charged. The vanguard fell into the pitfall traps Theo had dug again. If they were Magic Boars from the Sea of Trees or the undeveloped lands, they would fall into the traps one after another.
Unfortunately, they are indeed coordinated. The Magic Boars advanced along the path between the pits. My companions prepared to intercept them.
Letty held her sword upright, closed her eyes, and chanted a spell as if praying. A magic circle appeared above the blade. Then, the Mithril sword was dyed deep crimson, and Letty opened her eyes.
“Come on! You pigs!” When Letty flashed her crimson Magic Sword, a giant boar collapsed with a thud. As expected, Letty is strong.
On either side of her, Ria and Gil were also splendidly taking down Magic Boars, though they couldn’t do it in a single swing like her. But the monsters didn’t flinch.
They charged into the empty spaces left by the fallen monsters as if nothing had happened. At this rate, the vanguard won’t have time to rest. Just as I thought that, a single arrow sliced through the air and flew in.
The arrow pierced the eye of a Magic Boar perfectly, and it vanished, leaving behind black smoke. This gave the vanguard a moment to breathe. When I turned around, Erenruel was giving a thumbs up.
It was a masterstroke of archery that could be called divine. Truly, my companions are all elites. I also fired my Magic Gun occasionally to lighten the burden on the vanguard.
While we held back the Magic Boar offensive for a while, Aurasneel, who was shooting arrows from the turret, seemed to notice something and came down. He then called out to Ophelia to switch places.
Small Ophelia possesses agile and superb swordsmanship, but her stamina isn’t that high. When she retreated to the rear, she was breathing heavily. She must be tired from fighting continuously since the Magic Wolf and Magic Dog pack. Aurasneel is watching the battlefield well. It’s reassuring that he’s an all-rounder who can also serve as a vanguard.
Theo can also act as a vanguard, so we can manage somehow on our side. But looking at the Woodpole knights, they are being pushed back little by little by the Magic Boars. Stopping Magic Boars, which are larger and have greater attack power than Magic Wolves, is not easy. Finally, the Baron, with his injured arm, stepped forward.
At this rate, we won’t last long. Coordinated monsters are truly troublesome. I ran up the turret and surveyed the battlefield. With Body Strengthening Magic, I can move quickly too.
It seems a Magic Boar one size larger than the rest at the rear is the leader of this herd. Erenruel stopped the Magic Wolf leader with an arrow, but guard-like Magic Boars are surrounding this leader, so hitting it with an arrow seems difficult.
It will be a trial by fire, but I should use the strategy we prepared. I jumped down from the turret and called out. “Letty, Sophie, let’s go.”
Nodding, Letty and Sophie ran to my side, and Theo stepped in to take Letty‘s place.
I held their hands. It’s a bit embarrassing, but since they are wearing armor, I can’t ask them to grab my clothes. I concentrated and visualized the location I had prepared.
Activating Teleportation Magic, we jumped to a spot where the mountain had been flattened slightly so we could overlook the highway in the valley. Immediately, Sophie began to gather magic power.
Excessive magic power dyed the air around Sophie blue. Then, a magic circle larger than usual appeared behind her. Sophie had been conserving her magic power all along, but this was a serious blow.
“Tempest!” The high-level wind magic unleashed by Sophie struck the Magic Boar leader and its surroundings. From a high vantage point, we can target it even if there are other Magic Boars around it.
“Pugyaaaa!!” Screaming, the Magic Boars fell and turned into black smoke. The leader Magic Boar was standing, but it was bleeding.
I concentrated once more and teleported with Letty and Sophie. Teleportation Magic allows me to jump to places I haven’t been to, as long as I can see them.
Teleporting near the wounded Magic Boar leader, Letty immediately dashed out. I also fired the Magic Gun that I had loaded with a magic stone beforehand. The fire magic released from the Magic Gun hit, and the wounded monster lost its balance.
Letty rushed in and flashed her deep crimson Magic Sword, and the leader Magic Boar fell with a loud thud. “We did it!” Sophie rejoiced.
As planned, we defeated the Magic Boar leader. Quickly retrieving its Mana Core, we returned to the defensive position with Teleportation Magic before we could be surrounded by the Magic Boars.
Having lost their leader, the Magic Boars showed a moment of confusion. After that, they simply charged in mindlessly, and one after another fell into the pitfall traps.
Before long, the sun went down, and the remaining Magic Boars turned back. The knights, exhausted from the continuous battles, sat down in relief. We somehow managed to hold out. I’m glad the daylight hours were short.
“We somehow managed to defend it.” “Yeah, thanks to everyone. Still, that was tough.” “Yes, Brother. It is completely different from the undeveloped lands.” Indeed, coordinated monsters surging in with violent numbers were a threat on a different dimension.
