- Chapter 174: The Intensifying Monster Offensive
Today, an even larger herd of monsters attacked. It was a mix of Magic Wolves and Magic Boars, and there seemed to be Magic Deer as well. As they approached, to our surprise, we saw the Magic Boars pushing and rolling large rocks with their snouts.
Large rocks were dropped in one after another, filling up the pitfall traps. Since we have Dwarves skilled in Earth Magic with us today, we had planned to finish off any monsters that fell into the pits with Earth Spikes, but…
“Does this mean they learned from yesterday’s battle?” “Yes, William-sama. Grandmother said that we should treat a coordinated herd of monsters as if they were a group of humans.”
After filling the pits, the monsters headed toward us. The only consolation is that the ground filled with rocks is uneven, making it hard for them to gain speed.
If this were yesterday, we might have been overrun by this. But we have new preparations as well. With the Dwarves’ help, we built a sturdy iron fence in front of our defensive position.
With a loud boom, the Magic Boars crashed into the fence. The Magic Boars then thrust their snouts between the iron bars forming the fence, trying to push it over. The Dwarves swung their heavy-looking hammers, smashing them into the Magic Boars‘ snouts. Fitting for blacksmiths, the Dwarves’ weapon of choice is the hammer.
Unable to endure it, the Magic Boars backed away from the fence. Monsters gathered behind the fence like a traffic jam. Aiming for that, the mages fired their magic. It’s efficient since a single spell hits many monsters.
Luna and Sophie are being particularly effective. “Wind Cutter!” A blade of wind flew from the magic circle floating above Luna‘s head. She is using beginner magic to save mana, but it has far greater power than the same magic used by an ordinary mage.
“Fire Arrow!” Next to Luna, Sophie fired beginner magic, but this too had great power. The arrow of flame pierced a monster, turning it into black smoke.
Once the monsters in front of the fence thinned out, we opened the gates built into the fence, and the knights charged in. The sharpness of Letty‘s Magic Sword, dyed in deep crimson mana, is incredible. She is cutting down even Magic Boars with a single stroke.
Erenruel surveyed the battlefield and shot arrows precisely where needed. “There!” With a spirited shout, an arrow released by Erenruel pierced a monster’s brow.
I also fired my Magic Gun while Luna and Sophie prepared their next spells. When a large number of monsters surged forward, I used a Magic Stone imbued with Sophie‘s composite magic. The monsters were blown away with tremendous force.
Coordinating with each other, we continued to defeat the waves of monsters. Yet they kept springing up one after another. There are far more than yesterday.
Finally, a part of the fence was destroyed. Knights with shields and Dwarves went to plug the hole.
“Ugh!” “Are you okay?” It seems a knight was injured.
I distributed armor imbued with traits to the Woodpole knights, but they aren’t covered from head to toe. Plus, fatigue from the battles so far must be accumulating.
The number of injured is increasing little by little. The iron fence is breaking in various places too. This is bad.
“Letty, how much longer can we maintain the battle line?” “I don’t know, but the sun is still high.”
“Nuooo!” One of the Dwarves was injured in the arm. “Fall back!” Shouting, Aiakos swung his mace at the monster that inflicted the wound.
Aiakos is exceptionally strong even among the Dwarves. When I spoke to him briefly when Theo wasn’t around, he expressed regret over Theo‘s parents and spoke of his determination to protect Theo at all costs.
Everyone is cooperating and doing their best. But for us, who were few in number to begin with, the impact of having injured people is significant.
Luna spoke in an unusually severe tone. “William-sama, let us escape with Teleportation Magic. You must not lose your life here.”
True, if we teleport, we can return safely to Northernford. But if we run away, the Woodpole knights won’t be able to stop the monsters. Will they be able to escape?
Besides, Woodpole isn’t a walled city and isn’t suited for a siege. As I hesitated, Baron Woodpole shouted. “Lord William, please flee! You have fought enough for us!”
Is this as far as we go? Even called a Savior, I can’t protect everyone. If only I were a Hero or a Sage. I bit my lip.
But I have a responsibility to protect the lives of my companions. I tried to call out to my companions that I would use Teleportation Magic. At that moment, Letty‘s body was enveloped in a divine light.
