- Chapter 193: Let's Build a Communication Device (Part 2)
I knocked on Theo‘s room on the first floor of the workshop. “Theo, do you have a moment to help me?” “Yes, Master.”
Theo came out of his room. He always helps me without a single complaint; I am truly grateful.
I explained to Theo as we headed to the basement. “I made a communication device that transmits voice even when far apart. I want to test if the voice transmits properly.”
“A tool to send voice far away? That is amazing again. As expected of Master.” “No, no, I just tried to recreate something that existed in my original world.”
Arriving at the basement laboratory, Theo and I held one prototype communication device each and stood at opposite ends of the room. When I channeled magic power into it, the transparent plastic window glowed.
“Hello, can you hear me?” “Yes, I can hear you.” Oh, the voice reached properly.
Next, I had Theo speak. “Can you hear me? Master.” “Yeah, I can hear you.”
However, the voice was quiet and sounded scratchy. There is room for improvement there.
The rest is finding out how far away it can be heard. I asked Theo to wait in the workshop with the communication device, and I went outside.
“Hello, can you hear me?” “Yes, Master. I can hear you.” Then next is further away.
I teleported to the outskirts of Northernford. It’s a place where I sometimes test-fire magic. The voice became a little quieter, but we were able to talk.
Furthermore, when I teleported to the Fairchild Margrave residence in the Royal Capital, the sound became smaller, but we managed to talk somehow.
I think the basic performance is sufficient with this. Now for improvements. Consulting with Theo, I added materials and tried various things.
A few days later, I called Theo from the Royal Capital again. “Master, I can hear you well this time.” Yeah, if it can be used at this distance, it’s sufficient. The voice isn’t scratching either.
The improved communication device used this time has a large Magic Stone, made from a purified Magic Boar core, as its nucleus to increase sound output. And I used Mithril for some of the materials.
By using Mithril, which conducts magic power easily, the voice stopped breaking up. However, using Mithril made it expensive, and large Magic Stones aren’t generally available to begin with.
But Mithril mined from the veins in the Sea of Trees comes into the workshop, and knights and Elves bring us Magic Boar cores. There are also the Mana Cores from when we fought the massive monster horde. I need to purify those soon.
Theo, who had been watching me make a few, became able to make communication devices without using Duplication. And so, the two of us made 10 units for the time being.
We assigned numbers from 1 to 10 to the ten communication devices. We attached buttons with numbers 1 through 9 to the devices. When we tested it, the call properly reached the communication device with the assigned number.
Being able to talk to communication device number 10 by pressing 1 and 0 was particularly significant. It means it will be fine even if we increase the number of devices later.
I decided to distribute the completed communication devices to the Apostles and Elves first. Starting with Oliver, who is in the workshop.
“You have made something amazing again, William-sama. Every merchant would want this at any price.” “Thank you, Oliver. Since it uses Mithril and large Magic Stones as materials, it might be a bit difficult to sell.”
Next, I teleported to the Cardiff Earldom and gave a communication device to Letty. “It’s amazing that we can talk even when far apart. Even if monsters attack again, we can coordinate and respond.”
Then I teleported to the Elf Forest and gave communication devices to the Elder and Luna. Both of them were delighted, calling it a wonderful item.
I must also give one to Flora, who is an Apostle and my fiancée. When I teleported to the gazebo in the courtyard of the Royal Castle, Cecilia-san appeared. “Welcome, William-sama. The Princess is present today.”
Cecilia-san immediately went to call Her Highness Flora. “I was finally able to meet you at the Royal Castle. What business do you have today? Of course, you are welcome even without any specific business.”
“Thank you, Flora. I came because I have something I want to give you today.” When I explained the communication device, Flora was surprised. “You have made something amazing again. This is a revolutionary invention.”
“Not only is it useful when fighting monsters, but in terms of domestic affairs, we can contact each other immediately in case of disasters like heavy rain or earthquakes.” I see. The range of applications for the communication device is certainly wide.
Flora‘s insight is impressive as expected. In addition to being well-educated as a royal, she seems to be studying even more enthusiastically than before lately.
“Have you told Father about this communication device?” “No, I distributed them to the Apostles and Elves first. I’m thinking of reporting to His Majesty and Father after this.”
“My, so you told me first. I am happy. I shall report it to Father myself.” Her Highness was happier than I expected. It seems the order of reporting is important after all.
When I returned to Northernford, I reported to Father. Father was surprised just like Flora, calling it a revolutionary invention.
When I told him that Flora would report it to His Majesty, Father laughed, saying, “I am grateful that I don’t have to report to His Majesty myself. I feel like a load has been taken off my shoulders.” It seems I’ve been causing Father trouble because of the various things I make.
