- Chapter 37: Increasing the Medicine
Following the advice from the Elven Elder-san, I explained that finding Streptomycin, the specific medicine for Tuberculosis, and creating the Syringe was thanks to a Divine Revelation from the Gods. I was worried about everyone’s reaction, but it was accepted more smoothly than I thought. Rather, many people were convinced.
The maid assigned to Mother said, “The Mistress is like someone who embodies the will of the Goddess and illuminates this land, so perhaps the revelation was given to Lord William to save her.”
I think the servants’ talk reached Father and Mother‘s ears too, but my parents didn’t ask me anything. If I were to talk to them directly, I would want to tell the truth, so I am grateful they didn’t ask.
A letter came from Eddie, my elder brother. He heard Mother was severely ill and was preparing to skip school and return to the West, but he received word from Father that Mother had recovered and he didn’t need to return.
The letter said, “Will made medicine and cured Mother‘s illness, I heard. Thank you so much. I am truly proud of Will.” I thought I had gone too far this time, even if it was to save Mother, so I felt relieved that my brother accepted it straightforwardly and praised me.
Mother is recovering steadily. According to my past life knowledge, treatment should have required about six months of medication until complete recovery, but on the third day after administering the medicine, I used Appraisal and it was already Tuberculosis (Near Cure).
Do people in this world recover faster because they have Magic Power? I don’t know, but recovering quickly is a good thing. When we mass-produce the medicine and distribute it, even people resistant to injections will get them if they know they will be cured quickly. That way, fewer people will become victims.
However, how to increase the medicine is the problem. Theo replicated Streptomycin using soil as a material, but mass production was difficult for him.
By the way, the details of the skill Theo gained upon awakening were revealed at the Elves’ village. When Theo touched the Stone Slab that appeared from the World Tree, it glowed dimly, and next to The Blacksmith‘s description, the display Unique Skill ‘Replication’: Replicate what the Savior created using soil as a material appeared.
It is an unbelievable skill that can replicate things I made using precious or rare materials, just by using ordinary soil. I’m sure it will help us in the future. However, even replicating a small amount heavily consumes Magic Power, so it was impossible for Theo alone to replicate a lot of medicine.
Since this is the case, I guess I have to proceed with the orthodox method. Since Streptomyces Griseus, the Actinomycetes that produces Streptomycin, had been isolated, the first step is bacteria culture.
In my past life, we cultured it using Agar Medium. I haven’t seen Agar in this world, and even servants knowledgeable about cooking and sweets didn’t know about it.
Fortunately, they had Gelidium, the raw material for Agar. To make Agar from Gelidium, I think you add water, heat it to extract the Agar, then filter it, and cool it to solidify.
However, Production Skill can handle that part. Holding a strong image of Agar, I activated Production Skill on the Gelidium and water, and Agar was made.
Next was a Petri Dish, but since there is no plastic, I substituted iron. Also, speaking of culturing, Contamination from other microbes was a concern, but Streptomycin has high sterilizing effect, so it’s fine. After a few days, I checked, and the bacteria had properly multiplied.
All that remains is to separate the Streptomycin using Production Skill. After trying the whole process myself, I taught the craftsmen at the Workshop. Several craftsmen quickly learned and could make it well.
By the way, each craftsman has individuality and different specialties. For example, Carpenter, the coordinator, is good at building and repairing structures, perhaps because his name means ‘carpenter’.
The craftsmen who could make the medicine were taken off other work and devoted themselves to mass producing the medicine. We started administering it to severely ill patients in the territory, and also sent some to friendly noble houses and the Levant Trading Company.
However, since the only Syringes available are expensive silver ones, currently only nobles and major merchants can use them. To have the medicine used widely, I need to make cheaper Syringes and mass-produce them.
